Waunfawr which means "Big Moor", is a small village which lies between Caernarfon and Beddgelert with a bridging point for the Gwyrfai river. In spring the valley echoes with the sound of cuckoo's and woodpeckers, whilst the river attracts otters, ducks and dippers. The village has a considerable history associated with copper mines, slate and granite quarries, whilst the road through the village dates back to Roman times.
The village has a local nature reserve ' Parc Dudley' which covers the area of the old Dudley granite quarry, having an abundance of wildlife and beautiful walks and views of the mountains. The Welsh Highland Steam Railway which links Porthmadog and Caernarfon, has a station in the village. There is a convenience shop, the Antur Cafe and a pub serving craft beers and food all within walking distance. Horse riding and pony trekking is available in the village, and there is access to the National Cycle Route 8 via Lôn Gwyrfai is a cycling and walking route linking Waunfawr to Caernarfon.
